The UK seems to be pumping out a lot of these instrumental rock bands these days and today we have one on display to be torn apart er i mean reviewed.  This is not to say that You Slut! are forgettable in the way that most instrumental bands are (im looking at you Mogwai) quite the opposite in fact.  Where most deal in snooze worthy instrumentation, these boys pretend not have even heard of a build-up.  Serving up heaping helpings of some surprisingly inspired hardcore lite riffing and 90’s rock guitar interplay there is little time to spend on anyone idea for too long before barreling into the next.  On their first release here (critical meat) there is a lot to love.  Excellent transitions from idea to idea are a must with something this shifty and agile.  There tight rhythm section propels much of the album through at times mathy structures into straight pounding with good variety.

This is the true face of a “fun” rock album and it would be hard not to like no matter what your into.  There lies part of the problem with this mini release.  This is not music that is going to make you rethink the way you play or listen to music.  While thats fine for some people i generally expect a bit more thought from my rock music.  As stated above this is an expertly played and executed album but it is certainly not going to light hearts on fire for originality.  This type of thing has been done better before but its honestly hard to argue with an album thats so damn catchy.  Without a good melodic sense (as evidenced by tracks like “MyBloodyJesusExplorerOnFire” with its soaring anthemic guitar lines) this album would certainly fall much farther down the ladder.

Its nice to finally see more of the fun side of rock showing through in the “indie” scene these days without being bogged down by over dramatic cry babies that mask there inability to play in “experimental sounds”.  This outing shows that the band does have the chops to survive but only time will tell how the band will move on from this release.  Heres hoping
